Two Yeovil College students have represented Somerset at the English Schools Athletics Association (ESAA) Championships at Gateshead International Stadium.
Brett Harrison (17) of South Petherton (200m) and Jordan Davies (18) of Sherborne (shot putt and Senior Boys Captain) train with Yeovil College’s Athletics Academy and with their external clubs. They combine their training with a Level 3 Sports course and A Level programme at Yeovil College, respectively.
The students were selected for the Senior Boys competition after success at the Somerset County Championships. Former Stanchester Academy student Brett said:
“I was chuffed to compete at this level. Although it’s what I’ve been working towards, I know how tough the competition is! I started doing athletics six years ago and realised that I was quite quick, so my mum suggested that I joined the Yeovil Olympiads. I train quite hard there and at the Yeovil College Athletics Academy. The College helps with strength and conditioning and Andy Holmes, one of the lecturers, helps with technique. It’s helped me get stronger and something I’d not done before college. If you’re looking to improve in athletics or another sport, I’d recommend one of the Yeovil College academies.”
Yeovil College Curriculum Area Manager Matt Hann said “Yeovil College has an outstanding track record for nurturing sporting talent. Jordan and Brett have worked with their specialist coaches Andrew Holmes, Andrew Roda and at their club with the likes of Nigel Groves throughout the year and have put in some very good performances.
We’re delighted that their ability was recognised and that they were selected to represent Somerset County in these events. They’ve progressed through the Yeovil Area Championships and the Somerset Championships to get there, so it’s a very good achievement for all involved. All the students put in a lot of hard work and dedication to their sport and deserve to compete at this level.”
