Festive cheer will be spread to shoppers in Chard, Crewkerne and Ilminster with the news that they will be able to park for free on Saturday 17 December. South Somerset District Council’s (SSDC) Area West Committee agreed at their meeting in November to fund free parking on Saturday 17 December to encourage shoppers to support our market towns in the festive season and rediscover what can be bought locally.
FIREARMS SHOOT TO HIGH PRICES IN MILITARIA AUCTION
Lawrences’ bi-annual auction of Militaria, Coins and Medals comprised over 750 lots and keen participation from internet bidders ensured that little was left unsold. Highlights included a Grenadier Guards sword in the 1822 pattern, that had belonged to Frederic Thesiger, later Lord Thesiger (1827-1905). Full story: Read more
Corking opportunity for Lawrences’ Auctioneers
A new venture for Lawrences’ Auctioneers in Crewkerne, a selection of wines and spirits will be included in the firm’s forthcoming sale on November 18th. Specialist Neil Grenyer comments on a bottle of Avery’s Cognac from 1893: “Although dating from after the outbreak of the Phylloxera louse in 1872 which destroyed many of the old cognac vines, this 1893 bottle comes from the period 1875-1895 which produced some of the best cognacs of the 19th century as distillers and cellar masters knowledge had developed a strong understanding of the art.
