It’s time for everyone in and around Yeovil to dig out their running kits for Sport Relief again. On Sunday 23rd March the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile will be setting off from Yeovil Recreation Centre at 10.45am with hundreds of locals getting on their marks, set and go for Sport Relief.
The event – which is being organised by South Somerset District Council with support from Yeovil Town F.C and 1610 Leisure – will offer super sprinters and willing walkers a choice of one, three or six miles as well as having a variety of free fun activities so that people can make a morning of it.
Event organiser, David Blackwell, Leisure Projects Officer at South Somerset District Council explains more about the event and how to get involved: “Everyone is welcome to come along to the Rec. Enter now at sportrelief.com, get sponsored and help transform the lives of people living here in the UK and in some of the world’s poorest countries, while being part of an incredible nationwide event.
“This is the fourth time South Somerset District Council has hosted the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile and we are delighted to have Yeovil Town F.C on board to support us again. Now is the time to don the headband, get training and show the rest of the country what we can do. There will be plenty of free activities in the morning including circus skills, PlayArt and football skills with Yeovil Town Community Sports Trust so don’t forget to rope in your mates, family, boyfriend, girlfriend and colleagues too!”
Terry Skiverton, Assistant Manager at Yeovil Town, will again be taking part in the event: “I’m really pleased to be involved again. We had a go last time and it was great fun and Sport Relief is such a good idea for fund raising. I hope all Yeovil Town Supporters will give generously to the cause.”
It’s not just the public who will be taking on the fundraising challenge. Daring Davina McCall went the extra mile in the BT Sport Relief Challenge: Davina – Beyond Breaking Point. Davina travelled across the UK, all under her own steam – and all in the name of Sport Relief. By running, swimming and cycling for seven solid days, Davina hit the streets – and waters – of the UK in a bid to raise as much cash as she can and inspire the great British public to take on their own challenges, sporty or not!
On Friday 21st March the BBC will treat the nation to a super special night of Sport Relief TV, with presenters including Gary Lineker, Gaby Logan, Claudia Winkleman, Jack Whitehall, Clare Balding amongst others, hosting a star-studded show full of celebrity performances, comedy sketches, highlights from this year’s challenges and films about the incredible work Sport Relief supports. Del Boy and Rodney will also be back on TV screens after 10 years with a special Only Fools and Horses Sport Relief sketch. Strictly host, Tess Daly, will reveal the judges’ favourite partnership from Sport Relief Does Strictly, where four Paralympians and their professional dance partners, will have taken on a group dance challenge, hoping to impress the judges and take home the Sport Relief glitter ball trophy on the night.
Then on Sunday 23rd Yeovil will come together and take part in the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games.
Councillor Sylvia Seal who holds the portofolio for Leisure and Culture at South Somerset District Council said: “We want the fourth Yeovil Mile to be a fun, high spirited event in aid of Sport Relief. We are delighted to have help from Yeovil Town F.C and 1610 Leisure to help make this our best Sport Relief mile ever. One of the district council’s aims is to encourage participation in sport and physical activity and this comes in many forms. People can walk around in fancy dress if they like – it is all for a good cause.”
