Lantern Parade kicks off Yeovil’s festive season

Yeovil Town Centre will be lit up with a procession of lanterns on Saturday 19 November to kick off the Christmas switch on event.

South Somerset District Council and the Love Yeovil Marketing Team have also arranged free lantern making workshops with Playart Education on Saturday 5 November and Saturday 12 November.

The workshops will be held in the Octagons pop up shop in the Quedam and must be booked in advance.  All materials will be free of charge. You can book a session by calling 01460 55898, text 078170 83290 or visit www.facebook.com/Playart-Education or visit the Love Yeovil Facebook page.

It’s free to join the parade so get busy making your lanterns and join the competition, no naked flames are allowed so make sure you use battery operated lights. There will be two winners in an adult and children’s category, the winner of the children’s category will be invited up on stage to switch on the Christmas lights.

Judging will take place at 5.00pm in Ivel Square at the Quedam Shopping Centre.

The parade will leave at 5.30pm, returning to the Quedam Shopping Centre for 6.00pm and will be followed by the light switch on at 6.30pm. There will also be lots of festive entertainment in the shopping centre from 5.00pm.

Councillor Peter Gubbins, Chairman of South Somerset District Council’s Area South Committee said, “The lantern parade has been a very popular event over the last couple of years and we are pleased to continue with the event again this year. The free lantern workshops offer people the opportunity to get their hands on the tools and equipment they need to make lanterns ready for the parade on Saturday 19 November.”

There will also be free drumming workshops taking place in the afternoon on Saturday 19 November before the lantern parade. Drumming workshop participants and drumming company Drum Runners will lead the lantern parade through the town with a samba style twist. The drums used are made of upcycled materials.
