Each year, a town the size of Sunderland temporarily sets up camp in the middle of the beautiful Mendip countryside for one of the world’s most famous music festivals – Glastonbury. A huge amount of work goes into making the festival a success and, with just a few weeks until around 203,000 people descend on Worthy Farm in Pilton, Mendip District Council staff are hard at work behind the scenes, doing their bit to make sure the event passes off as safely as possible. LANGPORT’S GREAT DEBATE ON ‘NEW MAGNA CARTA’
On Saturday 6 June, Langport enjoyed a stimulating debate on the need for a reformed constitution for the UK. The 4th annual Bagehot Debate, a flagship event of the 2015 Langport Festival, commemorated the 800th anniversary year of Magna Carta, with two Barons and two students debating the motion ‘It’s time for a new Magna Carta’. The Debate was held in Huish Academy’s Sixth Form auditorium, and, as well as the Debate itself, the audience enjoyed a superb Magna Carta exhibition held by Curry Mallet, Somerset’s only Magna Carta village. 20 communities set to benefit from free Playdays
This summer 20 communities will come to life when South Somerset District Council brings free Playdays to towns and villages right across the district. From Wincanton to Combe St Nicholas and Henstridge to Long Sutton a wide range of exciting and fun activities will descend on each community. South Somerset District Council will be organising the Playdays in 13 communities and providing a small grant to help the other seven locations to organise their own event. Full story: Read more
