Experienced or first-time writers are being invited to create new five-minute monologues for performance by professional actors in Crewkerne shops. This is a great opportunity to turn a story into a drama!
As part of the Trading Local programme, short plays will be developed in workshops led by Shelia Hannon – co-producer of theatre company Show of Strength. Six workshops are to take place in various locations around Crewkerne.
Turn up to one of the earlier workshops and find out what makes a good monologue, then come back to a later workshop with a draft script and get advice on how to refine it. The 12 best plays will then be selected for performance by professional actors in Crewkerne on Saturday 31 May.
Workshops are free and there is no need to book a place – just turn up.
The project is being organised by ABCD (A Better Crewkerne & District) and Show of Strength, with support from South Somerset District Council and Crewkerne Town Council.

Cllr Angie Singleton, who chairs SSDC’s Area West Committee and has strategic responsibility for Market Towns said: “Creative people can have great fun working on their scripts and we hope both the workshops and the performances will be crowd-pullers. I am delighted that the District and Town Councils can help this initiative to provide something unusual, inspiring and entertaining in the heart of Crewkerne.”
The workshops are taking place:
• Thursday 27th February 2pm to 4pm in Bilby’s Café, Market Street
• Thursday 27th February 7pm to 9pm in the hall at Wadham School, Mount Pleasant TA18 7NT
• Tuesday 4th March 10 am to 12 noon in the Library, Falkland Square
• Tuesday 4th March 7pm to 9pm at the George Hotel, Market Square TA18 7LP
• Saturday 15th March 10am to 12 noon in the Council Chamber at the Town Hall
• Saturday 15th March 2pm to 4pm in the George Hotel, Market Square
